Kentucky Tea Party group waging war against McConnell

Senator Mitch McConnell Senator Mitch McConnell

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - It's a move getting a lot of attention in Kentucky and across the country this week. Tea Party groups around the Commonwealth say they are working to unseat Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, targeting his voting record.

The United Tea Party of Kentucky, with at least 15 cities on its bandwagon, is waging a political war against McConnell. For now, the Louisville Tea Party is staying out of the fight.

The state group contends McConnell is a big spending Republican and when it comes to the fiscal cliff, he just pushed taxpayers over another one. Spokesman John Kemper III, a Lexington businessman said it's time for McConnell to retire.

Kemper maintains it's hype that the senator is unbeatable.  He said the Minority Leader has a high disapproval rating and a major grass roots effort could take down the political Goliath.

Kemper said, "If he was interested in what we do and what we believe, he would be promoting legislation and putting forward small government ideas, but we haven't seen that from him, so 30 years of media spin and political machine spin has run it's course."

Louisville Tea Party President Sarah Durand is staying neutral, "No incumbent should ever be safe," she said, "Because it's our job, not just as the Tea Party, but as citizens to hold our elected officials accountable, but we need a really good candidate."

Durand said if a strong candidate is found, they might consider joining the effort, but the last thing they want to help create is a Dick Lugar situation in Kentucky.

McConnell's campaign manager Jesse Benton said in a statement, "Senator McConnell is a true friend of the Tea Party and is working to help carry their voices to Washington." Benton who ran the campaigns of Ron Paul and Senator Rand Paul added, "As I talk to grassroots activists across the state, I am very pleased with my reception and the strong relationships we are building."

The United Tea Party of Kentucky said although they are getting plenty of interest, no names of potential candidates are being floated yet.
