A Phoenix woman accused of child abuse after her young son overdosed on a prescription painkiller has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Maricopa County prosecutors say 36-year-old Jennifer Campos also was sentenced Thursday to lifetime probation for child abuse and attempted child abuse.
Campos and the child's father were accused of giving their then 2-year-old son a mixture of Kool-Aid and methadone at a Phoenix Motel 6 on Oct. 23, 2011.
When police and fire crews arrived at the motel at I-17 and Northern Avenue, emergency crews found the boy not breathing and rushed him to the hospital.
Authorities said that caused the toddler to overdose. The parents allegedly gave their son the mixture because his gums were bleeding and his teeth were rotting.
Court records indicate the child had methadone, amphetamine, acetone and nicotine in his system.
Campos originally pleaded not guilty to the charges before entering into a plea agreement.
