PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A hostage standoff came to a tragic end when deputies from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office found the bodies of a man and woman inside a guest house at a Laveen residence Thursday morning.

A Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman said the bodies were found after deputies used a stun grenade and entered the guest house about 8 a.m.

The incident began about 5 a.m. after a woman called 911 and said she went to check on her son in the guest house near 65th Drive and Southern Avenue and was shot at after she opened the door.

A Maricopa County Sheriff's deputy also shot as deputies responded, according to a sheriff's office spokesman.

Deputies had not officially identified the bodies, but one was believed to have been the son of the woman. A sheriff's spokesman said it had not been determined whether the deaths were the results of a murder-suicide or double suicide.

Deputies armed with assault rifles swarmed the scene and the standoff ensued. They said neither the woman nor the deputy were hurt.

About a dozen homes in the immediate area were evacuated and other nearby residents were told to stay in their homes, according to a deputy.

No other information was immediately available.
