NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -
A robbery victim took matters into his own hands Monday after a man with a gun entered his New Haven store demanding money.
Around 4:30 p.m., New Haven police said they were sent to Nim's, a store on Chapel Street, after receiving a 911 call from inside the store.
Police said the caller couldn't be understood, but they heard screaming in the background and the line abruptly went dead.
When officers entered the store, they said they followed the sounds of the screaming into the back room. There they said they found an Asian man pinning another man to the ground, and an Asian woman was found hiding in the rear of the back room.
The Asian man, identified as Jae Lee, the 42-year-old store owner, was found to be bleeding from a laceration to his head and a human bite to his thumb.
The man he was holding down, Daren Cogswell, 21, of New Haven, had an abrasion to his face.
EMTs were requested to the scene and the woman, identified as Hu Cui, a store clerk, was not hurt but was checked out because she is pregnant.
Cui told police that she was sitting behind the counter inside the store when Cogswell, armed with a gun, barged in. She ran into the back room screaming and called 911.
Lee then walked into the front of the store and that's when Cogswell pointed the gun at him and demanded money.
Lee said he gave Cogswell money from the register but he wasn't satisfied. Lee said he then emptied the entire cash register into an open backpack.
At that point, Cogswell tried leaving, and Lee wasn't about to let that happen.
Lee told police that he then grabbed a baton and hit Cogswell with it. The two began to fight and Cogswell ended up grabbing the baton from Lee and began to hit him with it.
The fight then moved to the back room, where after being hit in the head, Lee regained possession of the baton. Cogswell then began to hit Lee with his gun and bit his thumb.
Still undeterred, Lee was able to knock Cogswell to the ground and held him there until police arrived.
Police said they recovered a pellet gun and various items of his clothing that were torn off during the brawl.
Cogswell was arrested and charged with robbery, larceny, assault, carrying a facsimile firearm and carrying a dangerous weapon.
