MASON, OH (FOX19) -
Mason City Schools will not seek additional revenue with a levy on the May ballot, the district's Board of Education announced on Tuesday.
Officials say normal 'levy cycles' produce a surplus for districts in the first half, and a deficit in the second half. Mason is currently at the end of their levy cycle, with operating cash balances shrinking.
On Tuesday, the district approved an additional $6 million in cost reductions over the next two years at the meeting, in order to help stretch the levy passed in 2005.
"Our goal has been to try to keep staff reductions as far away from the classroom as possible, though class sizes have increased," explained Dr. Kist-Kline, Mason City Schools Superintendent.
The district's cost reduction plan includes a wage freeze for administrators and staff, and staff reductions in the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 school years.
