CLEMSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

After undergoing quintuple bypass surgery Friday, Clemson University Pres. James Barker said he has begun his rehabilitation.

Barker said in a statement released last week that doctors discovered blockages in his heart during an exam, which required triple bypass surgery. However, in a statement released Friday afternoon, Barker's wife, Marcia, said her husband ended up needing five bypasses instead.

In Monday's statement, Barker said he was able to walk a lap around the intensive care unit Sunday, and he was moved to a private room.

"The doctors are pleased with my progress, but they advise that it will take some time to heal," Barker said in the latest statement. "I am beginning my rehab work, and I plan to give it my best."

The president said he delegated his responsibilities to Provost Doris Helms, who was authorized by the Board of Trustees on Friday morning via a resolution to assume his duties and manage the business operations of the university while he recovers.

James Barker said in his statement that he expected to be hospitalized for about a week, followed by a period of leave to complete his recovery.

Barker said Monday he is looking forward to returning to Tiger town.
