LSU tries to get first SEC win on road Saturday night at Georgia

From LSU Sports

ATHENS, Ga. – The LSU men's basketball team looks for its first Southeastern Conference win of the season when it faces off against Georgia Saturday night at Stegeman Coliseum.

The game, set for 8 p.m. EST (7 p.m. CST) will be televised by CSS in association with Cox Sports Television and the broadcast will also be picked up by CSN affiliates in Houston, California, Northwest and Bright House Sports Network in Florida. The radio broadcast will be available on the LSU Sports Radio Network affiliates (Eagle 98.1 FM in Baton Rouge and in the Geaux Zone at LSUsports.net.)

LSU is 9-5 and 0-3 in the league off an 82-73 overtime loss to South Carolina at home on Wednesday night while Georgia fell to 6-10 and 0-3 in the SEC after losing 79-62 at No. 17 Missouri on Wednesday.

"Needless to say, we were disappointed with (Wednesday's) outcome," Coach Johnny Jones of LSU said. "I thought we had a great opportunity to get in on the winning side of conference play and the setback, obviously, didn't sit well. It's just something we've got to continue pushing through. The only encouraging part, I thought we played a lot of minutes last night without Johnny (O'Bryant) and (Anthony) Hickey. I thought the guys did a good job of really staying the course in battling and fighting throughout the game to give us a chance to get those guys back and stay in striking distance, and actually had a lead there late with them getting back in, but we weren't able to finish."

With Hickey and O'Bryant III both battling foul trouble, LSU had a four-point lead in the final two minutes of regulation, but South Carolina was able to tie the game and then went on to dominate the overtime period at the free throw line, making 9-of-10 to seal the win.

Expect LSU to go with the same lineup as of late with Andre Stringer (11.2 ppg), Charles Carmouche (9.9 ppg) and Hickey (11.8 ppg) at guards with O'Bryant III at forward (10.4 ppg) and center Andrew Del Piero (5.2 ppg).

Georgia is led by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, the sophomore who leads the Bulldogs in scoring (16.8 ppg) and rebounding (6.4) and is the only player to start all 16 games for Georgia. Vincent Williams had 23 off the bench to lead the Bulldogs in scoring at Missouri for Coach Mark Fox's team.

"Well, I think (Vincent) Williams is really good," Jones said. "He had a really big game against Missouri and he was explosive. Caldwell-Pope's really good, very crafty, and he was an All-American coming out of high school and he really hasn't disappointed. He's played extremely well and he's someone that we'll have to contend with and make sure that we try and contain him. Hopefully we can do a great job on him, because he's one of their main guys. They really look to him to get him going."

LSU returns home for its next game as it continues the Wednesday at home-Saturday on the road schedule for another week. The Tigers will host Texas A&M at 7 p.m. Wednesday on the SEC Network before going to Kentucky for an afternoon tilt next Saturday, Jan. 26.
