East Feliciana's Kendell Beckwith has been named the 2012 Warrick Dunn Award winner and the WAFB Sportsline Player of the Year.
The senior quarterback and linebacker beat out eight other finalists for the award that has been presented since 2007. Previous winners include Landon Collins (2011) of Alabama, Blaine Gautier (2007) of UL-Lafayette and Terrence Magee (2010) from LSU.
Beckwith was honored along with Catholic's running back Khalil Thomas, Port Allen quarterback Darian Claiborne, U-High defensive end Tim Williams, Loranger quarterback Jeryl Brazil, Brusly quarterback Jay Christophe, Lutcher quarterback Ruston Matherne, Parkview Baptist quarterback Brennan Bozeman and running back Hezekiah Randolph at the award ceremony with Warrick Dunn, the former Catholic High and NFL star.
Beckwith and the Tigers went into the playoffs as the 22 seed and made it all the way into the semifinals before losing to Notre Dame. He led his team to beat Farmerville with a 4th quarter comeback in the quarterfinals.
Overall in 2012, Beckwith had 79 tackles, 21 for a loss, 16 sacks, 8 rushing touchdowns, 772 rushing yards, 7 receptions, 2 75-yard touchdowns, 2 fumble recoveries, 2 forced fumbles, 1,213 yards passing and threw for 15 touchdowns.
Beckwith says he plans to continue playing football as a Tiger, committing to LSU on January 4th at the Under Armour All-America Game. He follows in his cousin Darry Beckwith's footsteps, who played for Les Miles from 2005 to 2008.
