GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -
Glendale's City Court held its first Mental Health Court on Wednesday.
The goal is helping to maintain psychiatric stability of defendants with mental illness, according to presiding judge Elizabeth Finn. She said that, in turn, will help to reduce repeat offenders and eliminate the high costs associated with court-ordered psychiatric evaluations.
The effort is a collaboration between the Glendale city prosecutor's office and Magellan Health Services of Arizona.
Magellan case managers will closely monitor defendants to make sure they take their medications as prescribed, keep from self-medicating on street drugs and alcohol and stay in contact with their case managers.
In October, the Glendale City Court teamed with Maricopa County Correctional Health Services to begin conducting mental health pre-screen evaluations on-site at the court. The new service helps to reduce "no-show" costs incurred when patients fail to show for their psychiatric evaluations conducted in downtown Phoenix.
