Over a dozen residents displaced after Mt. Airy fire

MT. AIRY, OH (FOX19) -

Emergency crews battled a large fire in Mt. Airy on Wednesday evening.

Firefighters were called to a 12-unit apartment complex, located at 5022 Hawaiian Terrace around 8:40 p.m.

Initial arriving fire companies reported heavy smoke in the area followed by a working fire on the first floor of the building.

An aggressive interior attack was initiated, but in a short amount of time, the fire had extended into the upper floors of the 3 story apartment.

Fire had extended into the common attack area of the building, causing an immediate evacuation of the entire 12 unit complex.

Aggressive ventilation work by the fire companies and extinguishment held the majority of the damage to the main fire apartment, with heavy fire damage in the attic and roof areas.

All occupants of the building were displaced by the fire and are being assisted by the Red Cross until repairs can be made by the owners.

One person was taken to UC Medical Center to be treated for minor smoke inhalation.

At this time the cause is still undetermined. Damage to the building is estimated at $200,000.

We will continue with updates as more information becomes available.
