BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
Rouge Police Chief Dewayne White's job is currently being evaluated by
Mayor-President Kip Holden.
confirmed to 9News that the chief is one of the many department heads whose
job could be in jeopardy depending on the outcome of the reviews.
tell 9News there have been discussions of bringing
in an interim chief to replace White in the near future.
"We will send him through it and every other department
head," Holden said. "If we see some things that are not going right or to our
satisfaction or need to be changed, that's what we're going to do."
The Mayor met with Chief White Monday and after that meeting the
chief announced several changes in the way the department deploys officers.
White is instituting a new policy aimed at dramatically increasing
the number of officers actually patrolling the streets of Baton Rouge.
Chief White's tenure has not been without controversy.
Chief White has a history of clashing with the police union and
took a lot of heat from members of that group for comments he made in several
White said some of his officers have racial issues and troubles
with the black people of the communities they are sworn to serve.
Recently, Chief White came under fire after the 9News I-Team
revealed several inaccuracies on the part of White concerning the manpower and
overtime used to help protect Minister Louis Farrakhan during a recent.
Mayor Holden acknowledged that there were problems with the chief's account, but said the chief was misinformed and did not have all of the
information in front of him when he first answered questions.
Wednesday Mayor Holden was asked if Chief White has his
unqualified support as chief.
"I'm not doing anything but evaluating. Once that evaluation
is completed then I'll make a decision. It just like I don't announce the score
of my test before I take the test and that's what I'll be doing," Holden
