TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -
Richard Glassel, an Arizona death row inmate convicted of shooting two people to death at a Sun City community meeting, died Tuesday of apparent natural causes, according to the Arizona Department of Corrections. Glassel, who was 74, died at Tempe St. Luke's Hospital.
Glassel was sentenced to death for killing Nila Lynn and Esther LaPlante and wounding three others on April 19, 2000, during a board of directors meeting of the Ventana Lakes Property Owners Association.
The shootings were believed to have been an act of revenge by Glassel against people he felt had wronged him in the community.
Edward Ettinger, Charles Yankowski and Gilbert McCurdy each suffered gunshot wounds. Glassel was subsequently subdued by the group and held on the floor until the police arrived.
Glassel was convicted in January 2003.
A DOC news release said Glassel was taken to the hospital on Jan. 9.
