CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

The Caddo Parish School Board has voted not to extend the contract of Superintendent Dr. Gerald Dawkins.

Dawkins has been with the district for 5 years. His current contract ends in August.

In a vote Tuesday afternoon, school board members voted 8-4 not to extend Dawkins' contract another two years.

School board members indicated school performance was among the issues considered in the decision. Some expressed concern that while there was improvement for some schools, the district is still not where it needs to be.

While the board has chosen not to extend the contract, it must still meet to formally address the requirement for notice in Dawkin's current contract.

Dawkins came to Caddo Parish from the Saginaw, MI school system in 2008.
