ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

A crash that happened Tuesday morning just after 11 a.m. at the intersection of LA Hwy 931 at Joe Sevario/Roddy Road in Ascension Parish took the life of an 83-year-old Gonzales resident.

Police say Audrey S. Wells had stopped at the four-way stop. She began driving forward when 23-year-old Travis R. Parent, Jr. of Denham Springs, drove through the intersection without stopping, crashing into Wells' vehicle.

Wells was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Louisiana State Police say it is unknown at this time if Parent Jr. was impaired at the time of the crash, however, troopers have submitted a toxicology sample for analysis.

Troopers believe that a mobile device inside of his vehicle distracted Parent, Jr. at the time of the crash. He was arrested by Troopers and booked into the Ascension Parish Jail for negligent homicide, reckless operation, and felony disregarding of a stop sign.

The crash is still under investigation, and further charges may be pending.
