BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A man charged in the death of his newborn baby and shooting his wife has been formally arraigned.

Frank Atkins faces a charge of second-degree murder in the death of the child.

Kayla Atkins was left paralyzed following the shooting that happened in June 2012.

According to her family, the baby died hours after being delivered.

District Court Judge Trudy White appointed Erin Mullen of the public defender's office to defend Atkins.

If convicted, he faces life in prison.

He has no bond in this case.

Atkins was originally arrested by U.S. Marshals several days after the shooting on Bay Street in Baton Rouge.

According to court records, Kayla Atkins filed for a temporary restraining order against her husband several days before she was shot.
