Officials break ground on Kenton Co. Dispatch expansion

INDEPENDENCE, KY (FOX19) -

Kenton County took a major step towards consolidating dispatch services throughout the area on Tuesday.

Officials broke ground on the new $500,000, 2,700 square foot expansion to the Kenton County 911 Communication Center, which will handle more dispatchers and more equipment.

Currently, four areas use the county's 911 call center, located near Kentucky 17 and Nicholson Road; Covington, Taylor Mill, Independence and the unincorporated areas in the southern part of the county.

Officials say the center is pressed for space with those cities on board, and can't take on any additional cities until the building expansion is complete. The contractor for the project proposed an aggressive 100-day construction schedule, in an effort to make a smooth transition to the consolidated dispatch system during 2013.

"We do expect around the first of July, or around the first of August, that we will be bringing on Ft. Mitchell, Lakeside Park, Crestview Hills and Edgewood," said Kenton County Judge Executive Steve Arlinghaus.

This means only Erlanger, Elsmere, Villa Hills, and Crescent Springs will still use Erlanger's 911 center.

"Erlanger's still interested in trying to run their own dispatch center and that's fine but I hope we can continue to have talks with Mayor Tom Rouse of Erlanger, and continue talks to see if we can't come to some type of agreement that would satisfy everybody," said Arlinghaus.

The addition is expected to be completed by March 1st.
