Icy roads cause issues across Memphis area

MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) – Putting Monday's traffic nightmare into obvious terms took speaking to just one frustrated driver.

"It's backed up," said Wendy Jackson of Memphis.  "I hate driving in it ‘cause people don't know how to drive."

Jackson was among the hoards of commuters stuck in traffic across the Memphis area.  Views from TDOT's camera network illustrated the issues.

Accidents were among the problems along Bill Morris Parkway where ice also prompted the temporary shutdown of several overpasses.

"It was kind of a little hectic today on the expressway," said Jackson.

Chopper 5 watched as crews stopped traffic in order to salt the old bridge across the river to give drivers a better grip.  It's the type of work Memphis Public Works started in some areas in advance of the ice.

"We have our complement of salt spreader trucks ready to go," said deputy public works director Robert Knecht.

"We get our information from various resources like the police department and emergency management," said Knecht.  "So, we take that information and use it to direct our equipment and resources."

Places always of particular concern in the city during winter weather include overpasses along Bill Morris Parkway, Sam Cooper Boulevard, and Austin Peay.

Smaller bridges in more rural areas can be even more treacherous.  It's all the more reason to take your time.

"That's the best thing to do," said Wendy Jackson.  "Keep it slow, take your time."

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office implemented its "inclement weather policy" Monday.  It means drivers involved in minor crashes should exchange information and report it later.
