Falcons take in win, look to NFC Championship

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Rise up, Falcons fans. The team will play in the NFC championship game Sunday for only the third time in team history. It's the first time the Falcons will be playing at home.

The Falcons overcame losing a 20-point lead to take home the "W" 30-28 over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

"To come in, get this win and get that monkey off our back was huge," center Todd McClure said.

The win is significant for the franchise. It's the first playoff win under head coach Mike Smith and with QB Matt Ryan. The team produced when it needed to in the final 31 seconds of the game.

"With 31 seconds and two timeouts, we knew we could move the ball into field goal range," Smith said.

That field goal moved the team to the NFC championship game. It's the first postseason win for tight end Tony Gonzalez in his 16 seasons in the NFL.

"Just because we got this victory, it's not, this isn't it. I told you from the beginning our goals are still trying to get to the Super Bowl and win. This is one step closer to that," Gonzalez said.

Defensive end Kroy Biermann feels the fans helped propel the team to victory.

"They were on their toes and screaming and there when we needed them," Biermann said.

And they want those same fans to turn out Sunday, because Smith knows the team's next opponent, the San Francisco 49ers, are a tough team.

"It gives us a chance to keep playing. In the playoffs, you want to keep playing. The challenges are going to be big with this San Francisco team," Smith said.

Players said they'll take the win and will look toward their next opponent.

"That first one is always the hardest. Now you know you can win a playoff game, you've got that confidence. Let's go on and win the next challenge," running back Michael Turner said.

Smith said the goals of the team are much higher than just winning one playoff game. He moved his focus to the 49ers Monday morning.
