BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
There has
been a break in the heavy rains for southeast Louisiana, but rivers in the area
continue to be monitored as many are already above flood stage and more rain
is expected at the end of the weekend.

Meteorologist Jeff Morrow said showers and thunderstorms return to the forecast
on Sunday as another storm system and cold front approach. The front will sweep
through the area Sunday afternoon, causing temperatures to drop during the
afternoon and evening hours.
The front will stall along the coast keeping wet
weather in the near forecast. The start of the work week will be a cold, rainy
event. Rainfall totals could average in the 1" to 2" category with a
few isolated spots exceeding those totals.
The flood
warning continues for several rivers in the region. The Amite, Tangipahoa and
Tickfaw rivers are being closely watched by people living near them. The following
information is from the National Weather Service:
The stage of
the Amite River at Denham Springs was 32.1 feet Saturday morning. Minor
flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast. The flood stage is 29.0
feet. The river is expected to continue to fall to below flood stage by Monday
evening.
The stage
of the Amite River at Port Vincent was 9.4 feet Saturday morning. Minor
flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast. The flood stage is 8.0
feet. The river is expected to continue rising to near 9.8 feet by Sunday
afternoon. The river is then expected to fall below flood stage on Wednesday
morning.
The stage
of the Amite River at Bayou Manchac Point was 12.8 feet Saturday morning. Moderate
flooding is occurring and moderate flooding is forecast. The flood stage is 9.0
feet. The river is expected to continue rising to near 13.1 feet by Saturday
evening. The river is then expected to fall below flood stage late Tuesday.
The stage
of the Amite River at French Settlement was 4.7 feet Saturday morning. Minor
flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast. The flood stage is 4.0
feet. The river is expected to continue rising to near 5.5 feet by Monday
morning then begin falling.
The stage
of the Tangipahoa River near Robert was 19.9 feet Saturday morning. Moderate
flooding is occurring and moderate flooding is forecast. The flood stage is
15.0 feet. The river is expected to continue to fall to a stage of 19.4 feet by
Sunday morning and fall below flood stage early Friday morning, Jan. 18.
The stage
of the Tickfaw River near Holden was 17.1 feet Saturday morning. Minor flooding
is occurring and minor flooding is forecast. The flood stage is 15.0 feet. The
river is expected to continue to fall to below flood stage by Tuesday
afternoon.
The stage
of the Tickfaw River near Montpelier was 13.4 feet Saturday morning. Minor
flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast. The flood stage is 13.0
feet. The river is expected to continue to fall to below flood stage by
Saturday afternoon.
