ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) -
High water might keep some roads closed and a lot of people inside, but one Ascension Parish woman says she can't let bad weather get in the way of her job.
"Rain or shine, it could be hailing and Frankie is going to be on time," said Rodney Gauthier.
Rodney Gauthier's elderly mother-in-law depends on Frankie Tortorich's daily visit. She is one of four employees with the ascension council on aging who delivers hot meals to seniors throughout the parish.
"We always ensure that they get their meals. We like to make sure they get their meals on time if possible, but sometimes they are delayed," said Tortorich.
This week, heavy rains and water over roadways are slowing Tortorich down. But she says, it will not stop her from getting a hot lunch to each of her 41 clients.
"I have a couple of them that their driveways are kind of long from the highway, and if there's any complication where I can't get in the driveway, I'll get out the van with the meal and I'll go deliver it to the door," said Tortorich.
She says some of her clients don't have family to look after them, and those who do are often home alone while relatives are at work. So each senior anxiously awaits her arrival.
"Boy it means everything to me sometimes because I be looking for her," said Eva Lewis, a senior who receives meals daily. "Yeah, I'm looking for that hot meal."
"It's very important because we have my 96-year-old mother-in-law. And this meal here means a lot to her," said Gauthier.
The rain isn't over here yet, which could mean driving through more high water.
"Well that's Louisiana weather for you. You have to be prepared," said Tortorich. "You take whatever comes, and you deal with it."
