MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
Many of the team members responsible for assembling the vehicles at Hyundai Motor Company's Montgomery, Alabama production plant will be working on their cheers Monday night instead of building Sonata and Elantra sedans.
Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama spokesman Robert Burns confirmed the plant will stop rolling out its popular vehicles for a short time so employees can watch the #1 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the #2 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide battle for the BCS National Championship in Miami, Florida.
Burns said the decision was made by the leadership team before the winter shutdown. The plant isn't losing any production ground. It's simply "shifting" its production schedules. Team members worked on Saturday, January 5 so they could be off for Monday's game.
Regardless of the winner in Miami, don't expect the assembly line in Montgomery to be quiet for long. Production ramps up again Tuesday at 6:30am.
If the Alabama Crimson Tide wins, it will be its third BCS National Championship in four years and the fourth consecutive time the state of Alabama has been home to the national champion. Auburn holds the title for the 2010 season.
If the Notre Dame Fighting Irish win, it will be the team's first national championship since 1988.
