BAKER, LA (WAFB) -
A Baker Police Detective is being hailed as a hero, even though he says he
was just doing his job.
A disabled man was trapped inside a burning house until Baker Police
Detective Sergeant Keon Washington charged into the smoke-filled home.
Sgt. Washington was first on the scene to the house fire on Tristian Avenue
Friday afternoon in Baker, LA.
Neighbors told him the man inside the house was wheelchair-bound.
Sgt. Washington didn't hesitate before running inside.
"I just wanted to make sure that if someone was inside, that we could
get them out. I'm not a fireman, but from what I saw, I didn't think that
the fire was that bad to where I couldn't go in the house and make sure that no
one was in there. When I got here, my instincts just wanted to make sure
that whoever was in there, we could get them out," said Sgt. Washington.
The resident was checked out on the scene and released by EMS.
