LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - If you drive downtown there is no doubt you've encountered detours because of water main breaks at several intersections.
Three intersections remained closed throughout the week. Two streets are expected to reopen by 7 p.m. Friday.
"Work will be completed tonight on St. Catherine Street, between Second and Third, as well as Seventh Street near Magnolia," said Vince Guenthner, a Louisville Water Company spokesperson.
The cold snap is preventing progress on another repair project on First Street near Kentucky. Traffic will be detoured on First between Caldwell and Kentucky through the weekend. Guenthner said First Street should be reopened by Monday, January 7.
"It's just a really large break," said Guenthner. "When you have an area of the street and that challenging it takes time to make the repair."
A 20-inch main break buckled part of the pavement on 7th Street near Magnolia Street. Crews blame the frigid temps because when water dips to 39 degrees it stresses out underground pipes.
"This is certainly more than we typically have. As the water temperature rises, that's really the best reprieve we can get," Guenthner said.
The Metropolitan Sewer District said water from two of the breaks mixed with raw sewage. Personnel estimate more than 74,000 gallons of the mixture spilled into Beargrass Creek and cleanup is not possible.
