WALNUT HILLS (FOX19) -
A group of residents spoke out about a local YMCA on Thursday.
Members of the community held a news conference, saying the YMCA wants to close down the Melrose Avenue location, despite an increase in membership and other progress with the branch.
A speaker at the news conference, Sam Malone, said, "The YMCA has been trying to close the Melrose Branch for several years. Many years actually, and we thought we had a promise with the Y, and unfortunately, they don't feel they need to keep their promise to the black community."
Representatives from the YMCA were also in attendance, in effort to explain their side of the story.
"I can tell you, emphatically, the YMCA will not be closing the Melrose Y. We will continue to offer all the programs that are offered today."
The CEO of the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati said there will be changes to the hours of operation at the Melrose Branch to better align with how and when the facility is used by the community.
