The American Red Cross says its office in Mobile suffered heavy damage and three of its disaster trailers there were destroyed by storms that ripped across southern Alabama.
The trailers house relief items like cots and blankets. All but one chapter vehicle suffered damage, mainly blown out windows.
Red Cross officials say that despite "significant" damage to the office, they are still able to use it and were working to assist others in the Mobile area in the storm's aftermath.
Once it is safe, the Red Cross says it will mobilize staff and volunteers in rental vehicles to go in to affected neighborhoods to provide initial damage assessment of affected homes. So far preliminary damage assessments indicate 10 homes with major damage (or destroyed) and 50 with minor damage, or were "affected" which could include power outages.
Donations can be made to your local American Red Cross chapter or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013. For more information about local American Red Cross chapters, go to www.alredcross.org.
