COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The man accused of abducting two of his children was taken into custody near the South Carolina/North Carolina state line after a police pursuit around noon.
Authorities say 37-year-old Dennis Matthew Penny, II was arrested in a field off of Tirzah Church Road in Union County, NC after the chase.
His children, Dennis Matthew Penny, III and Grace Elizabeth Penny, are safe and in the custody of authorities.
A withdrawal from a Lancaster bank tipped investigators off to Penny's location Thursday morning. A patrol officer investigating the transaction spotted Penny's pick-up truck and attempted to stop him.
According to Sheriff Barry S. Faile, Penny eventually stopped the vehicle on US 521 near Hubbard Road, but refused to exit the vehicle. After a few minutes of negotiation, officers unsuccessfully attempted to pull Penny out of the vehicle.
Penny reacted by driving off with the children in the vehicle, the sheriff said. The pursuit eventually went off road with the vehicle eventually being stopped by a fence, Faile said.
Officers quickly approached the vehicle securing the two children and taking Penny into custody. The children, while somewhat shaken by the incident were unharmed physically, Faile said.
Authorities issued an AMBER Alert for the two children Thursday morning.
According to SLED, Penny took the kids from the Mount Croghan area of Chesterfield County Thursday around 7:30 a.m.
Penny will be held in Union County pending extradition to Chesterfield County on charges of burglary and kidnapping. He will also face additional charges in Lancaster County, the sheriff said.
