NEWTOWN, OH (FOX19) -

Leaders in the Village of Newtown spoke out against a proposed highway project on Thursday.

This, following a report released by the Sierra Club, naming it one of the top 50 Worst Transportation Projects.

It's called the Eastern Corridor Highway Project. In a nutshell, it's a series of transportation improvements, planned to connect central Cincinnati and the communities to the east, heading through Hamilton County into Clermont County.

Newtown's Mayor, Curt Cosby, and Police Chief, Tom Synan said the village would lost a large number of homes and businesses if the project is built.

In addition, they highlighted the Sierra Club's report, which was put onto the 'worst' list considering public health, safety and ecological risks associated with building it.

The same report named Cincinnati's Streetcar Project as one of the top 50 'Best Transportation Projects'.

Those who support the Eastern Corridor Highway project say it will help alleviate traffic congestion and improve Tri-State roadways for future development.
