BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
Authorities found the body of an elderly woman in the car that went off a roadway and into a canal Monday afternoon. About four hours after the car went into the canal, officials found the vehicle in the deep water.
The driver has been identified as 89-year-old Vivian Augustin. The exact cause of death is still unknown pending an autopsy.
The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office said the St. George Fire Department called in the accident around 1:30 p.m. Monday.
Firefighters reported a vehicle veered off the I-10 Frontage Road between the Mall of Louisiana and I-10 East.
Deputies, firemen and EMS personnel were on the scene searching for the vehicle and the driver. It took nearly four hours to get the small SUV out of the water.
Witnesses say the dark-colored Toyota Rav4 missed the last curve before driving up onto the frontage road. Witnesses tell police they believe a woman was driving.
St. George Fire assisted the EBRSO Emergency Services unit by using pike poles to probe down into the water. They are estimating the water is 20 to 25 feet deep. Airmed assisted the search from the air.
The investigation into what caused the accident is ongoing.
