Divers find drowning victim in Toledo Bend

SABINE PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

A dive team from DeSoto Parish has found a Natchitoches Parish man who drowned Sunday night in Toledo Bend Reservoir.

The Sabine Parish Sheriff's Office says 23-year-old Justin Wilson was found in 8 feet of water not very far from where he was last seen.

Witnesses told the sheriff's office that a boat near the Hwy. 191 Bridge came untied during stormy weather on Sunday night and Wilson tried to swim out to get the boat, but he never returned to shore.

"I think three of them went in the water and two of them made it back complaining of muscle cramps, the water was 62 degrees," said Sabine Parish Sheriff Ronny Richardson.

Sheriff Richardson says the bad weather prohibited divers from searching Toledo Bend Sunday night.

"We never got to attempt to search last night because of the weather. It was too bad to put divers in the water, a lot of lightening," said Sheriff Richardson.

As the search began Monday morning family and friends watched quietly from the banks of Toledo Bend. Within just a few hours of searching their worry would turn to sorrow when they learned dive teams had found his body.

"He was the kind of guy that joked. He told so many jokes that was his hobby, joking, hunting and fishing, never got in no trouble. He was a good kid," said family friend, Timothy Bynog.

Wilson was from Provencal, La. An account has been set up in his name at People's State Bank.
