BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
Three of the seven members of a gang accused of robbing two kids at knifepoint have had their bonds set.
Judge Kathleen Ritchey dropped the hammer on one defendant Friday, setting his bond at $10,000.
Sheriff's officials say the group calls itself "The Get-Up Boys."
While
one of the suspects was let go, three were given $10,000 bonds. Three
other suspects, including a girl, are still waiting to see the judge.
The prosecutor calls this case a strange one for a number of reasons.
"To
have seven youths engaged in a crime at the same time is highly
unusual," said Prosecutor Curtis Nelson. "The fact that a weapon was
used in this offense. The fact that this is a group that's going by a
street name. This is unusual that what we deal with in juvenile."
At least two of the seven are eligible to be transferred to adult court.
"There
are many considerations that you have to look to when determining a
bond amount or bail amount and one of those things is the ability of the
defendant to make bail," said Lilian Hangartner, who represents one of
the suspects.
The District Attorney's Office has no intention of letting these kids get off lightly.
"If your going to carry these street names and engage in violent criminal acts, we will address it as a gang act," said Nelson.
The female suspect is slated to be in court Monday with the two others appearing later this month.
