A state prosecutor has raised challenges to a trial that ended with a self-help author imprisoned for the deaths of three people following a sweat lodge ceremony.
Attorneys for James Arthur Ray are seeking to have his conviction on three counts of negligent homicide overturned or to have a new trial. An appeal calls jury instructions and the conduct of county prosecutors into question.
Assistant Attorney General Craig Soland responded Monday and also included the state's own appeal. He's challenging a decision that kept a doctor from testifying at trial, along with a jury instruction granted to the defense and another denied to the prosecution.
The Arizona Court of Appeals set the Monday filing deadline after granting three requests for an extension and threatening to sanction Soland if it wasn't met.
