GSky Plant Systems, Inc. helps maintain the architectural beauty and charm of downtown Columbus with the installation of 7,000 square feet of Basic Wall™ green walls in Cummins’ newly expanded headquarters and 800 space parking garage along Jackson Street, between Sixth and Seventh Street.
Columbus, IN (PRWEB) November 30, 2012
GSky Plant Systems, Inc., a leading provider of vertical green walls completed a massive installation of 7,000 square feet of Basic Wall™ in coordination with Ambius LLC, the world’s largest single provider of plants, replica foliage and flowers for commercial environments. The green walls are on two sides of the four-story parking garage in Cummins’ newly expanded headquarters, located in downtown Columbus, IN.
In order to support expansion and provide sufficient parking for Cummins employees, the city of Columbus and State of Indiana spent approximately $8 million to build the four-story, 800-space parking garage. Cummins worked really hard to find balance in maintaining the beautiful architecture and historical features, such as prairie-style and red brick design of the town in midst of adding new structures, all with the intention of incorporating greenery.
“Initially, the parking garage did not have any design elements implemented on the North and South side of the building, so when we took to the City for review they wanted more architectural designs to make it more aesthetically pleasing. The building across the street had ivy growth, which gave us the idea to incorporate greenery in the garage as a compliment to the architecture.” – Mitch Davison, Project Manager, F.A. Wilhelm Construction.
The Basic Wall™ was the most appropriate and cost-effective solution for this project with the capability of providing long-term mass vine coverage, while being water-efficient. The vines will eventually grow in to fill the North and South side of the parking garage, which fits nicely with the surrounding architecture.
“We looked at several systems and chose GSky’s Basic Wall™ because it seems to be the most simply put-together, yet complex system having both vine containers and irrigation worked in to the design to ease installation.” – Dan Weinheimer, Architect of Record, American Structurepoint, Inc.
Basic Wall™ is intended to accommodate sizeable yet efficient coverage of greenery offering a cost-effective solution for garages and concrete buildings. The Basic Wall™ system is made up of floating stainless steel planter vine containers that safely train vines over a building façade creating lasting, beautiful ivy coverage in 1/10 of the time traditional vine trellis systems take without risking damage to the building.
Part of Cummins’ goal is to bring people to Columbus, and to expand without affecting the charm of downtown. The green walls add a breath of fresh air, and create a softer façade that integrates well with the existing architecture.
