HOLBROOK, AZ (CBS5) -
A search for a "person of interest" in connection with a residential burglary put a northern Arizona school on lockdown on Thursday, Navajo County sheriff's deputies said.
Sheriff's investigators said they were able to trace a vehicle seen at the burglary scene on Tuesday to Michael Whetstone, 32, of White Mountain Lakes.
On Thursday, a deputy made a traffic stop on State Route 260 and Hanson Lane in Lakeside. The driver stopped the vehicle and took off running northeast through a residential area and into the forest.
Deputies said they learned the vehicle was registered to Whetstone. Deputies and K-9 officers from Pinetop Lakeside police, Show Low police and Arizona Department of Public Safety searched the area. The junior high school was placed on lockdown for 45 minutes.
After a two-hour search, the K-9s lost the scent of the person and the search was called off.
Whetstone is described as 6' tall and weighs 160 pounds. He has brown hair and green eyes. He was last seen wearing a leather jacket, sun glasses and blue jeans.
People with information about his whereabouts are asked to call the sheriff's office's tip line at 800-78CRIME or contact the sheriff's office at 928-532-6060 or 928-524-4050. Callers can remain anonymous.
