State Representative Jeff Thompson has requested a hearing from the 8th District of Louisiana in order to look into the conditions at Explo.
"This should have never happened," Thompson says.
The request comes on the heels of a Louisiana State Police investigation into Explo, a company that makes propellants for the military. Investigators say Explo reportedly improperly stored one million pounds of propellant at Camp Minden.
The letter, addressed to Chairman John M. Schroder, Sr. with the House Committee on Homeland Security, he writes "It is my request that representatives of Explo Systems be urged to attend the meeting to respond to questions."
The letter was sent on Thursday, just a few days after the announcement that Explo would be cited, and that there's a criminal investigation underway.
Thompson writes that the conditions at Explo put citizens at risk, including school children.
He also states: "It is my request that representatives of Explo Systems be urged to attend the meeting to respond to questions."
"I have great concern not only for the families and the school children that live around this propellant on a daily basis, we've now put at risk some of our law enforcement and disposal personnel unnecessarily," Thompson said during a phone interview.
No date has been set for a hearing. Thompson says he wants the danger to be removed from the area first.
"This should have never happened," Thompson says.
