AVONDALE, OH (FOX19) -
A man wanted in connection with a deadly police-involved shooting in Avondale was taken into custody on Thursday afternoon.
Cincinnati Police confirmed the arrest of Gerry Branner, 22, following an undercover drug deal on Nov. 21 that led to a CPD officer shooting and killing Dontez O'Neal, 19.
Cincinnati Police, along with the department's Fugitive Apprehension Unit, tracked Branner on Wednesday evening near I-75 at Mitchell Avenue, but were unable to locate and apprehend him.
On Thursday, a Hamilton County grand jury indicted Branner on murder, assault and drug charges.
In addition to Cincinnati Police, others were trying to catch Branner.
"I'm just happy that we have a violent suspect off the streets of Cincinnati," said Chief James Craig. "People who feel that they want to hurt police officers or the community, we want to get them off the streets."
The Hamilton County S.W.A.T. team, the U.S. Marshal's Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms all were looking for Branner.
"Yes. We had some assistance from our federal partners, and certainly, I want to thank our federal partners as well as great work by the Cincinnati Police Department, because this was a lot of work," added Craig. "We've been working on this almost around the clock for the last 48 hours."
This past week is not the first time Branner's managed to slip away.
In June, he was pulled over by the Ohio State Patrol, and when the trooper walked up to his car, he took off.
They chased him, and two miles later his car flipped over, crashed into a telephone pole and caught on fire. Branner tried to escape then, but he was caught and taken to University Hospital with multiple fractures in his legs.
The next day, despite a cast on one leg and despite eight warrants, he somehow managed to get up and walk out of the hospital. No one was guarding him.
Branner was caught just before 5 p.m. on Thursday evening outside an apartment complex on Nandale Road in Colerain Township. No shots were fired and no one was hurt.
In court on Friday, Branner's bond was set at $3 million.
A second suspect involved in the drug bust, Robert Mathews, 23, was shot in the arm during the incident, and was arrested and charged with four counts of drug trafficking.
On Thursday, he posted a $10,000 cash bond and will remain free until his next scheduled court appearance.
