MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
While controversy is brewing on the campus of Alabama State University, the statutory president of that university's board of trustees, Alabama Governor Robert Bentley, is thousands of miles away on another continent working to lure new business to the state.
Governor Bentley is dispatching a letter to ASU Board Chairman Elton Dean officially requesting that ASU's November 29 full board meeting be rescheduled until the governor is back in the United States.
"The success of Alabama State University is vital to me and to the State of Alabama," Bentley wrote, "and I need to be present for the discussion of President Joseph Silver's administrative leave recommendation."
Governor Bentley wants the meeting moved to December 5 but left the date open to other dates that may be convenient to the board.
Governor Bentley is in Germany meeting with Airbus suppliers whom he's trying to encourage to do business in Alabama.
Alabama State University is facing a growing controversy after the Executive Committee of the ASU Board of Trustees voted unanimously to place Silver, who's only been on the job for two months, on administrative leave with pay.
Silver says he uncovered "something" and was told to back off.
