CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Acting Police Chief Ltc. James Whalen held a press conference on Friday afternoon regarding an undercover drug bust turned fatal on Wednesday evening.

Authorities say police planned to go undercover in Avondale and make a pre-arranged purchase of heroin from the suspects, and then make the arrest.

However, the three suspects involved fled in their car. According to police, at least one suspect eventually came out of the vehicle with a gun and shots were fired at police.

During the press conference, Orlando Smith was identified as the officer who fired shots at the suspects. Both Mathews and Dontez O'Neal, 19, were hit.

Both suspects were taken to University Hospital, where O'Neal died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Mathews left the hospital on Thursday and was taken to the Hamilton County Justice Center.

He appeared in court on Friday morning with his arm in a sling. He is charged with distributing heroin.

The third suspect is still at large as of Friday afternoon.

We will continue to update with more information as it becomes available.
