Decades old Jesus statue missing from cemetery

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Directly across the Roselawn Cemetery on North Street is Roselawn Monuments. For decades, a Sacred Heart of Jesus statue has been there facing East. Baton Rouge police said the Italian Carrera marble piece was stolen over the weekend.

"The statue is about 4'6" tall and weighs approximately 500 lbs," said BRPD Cpl. Tommy Stubbs.

What sets this Jesus statue apart is that it was built by an artist in Italy, delivered to Baton Rouge and had been in one location since the 50's.

"The business has been here 73 years and for 60 years of that, I know that statue was here for that period of time, maybe even longer," said Roselawn Monument's Shelley Roy.

Roy said the Jesus statue had been on display for customers if they wanted one similar to it placed on their loved one's grave.

He added his business has been broken into and items have been stolen before, head stones or small monuments, but this, Roy said, is the most sizable theft yet.

"We can replace it, but it just won't be the same thing. It's not going to be done by an old world craftsman for one thing. He's probably no longer alive," said Roy.

Anyone with information on the statue's whereabouts is urged to call Crime Stoppers 344-STOP.
