Store starts alcohol delivery service for Tyler

WINONA, TX (KLTV) -

A Winona Liquor store is staking claim to a piece of Tyler history.

The store says they are the first to sell beer and wine in the city of Tyler, following the passage of the alcohol referendum 10 days ago.

Now that the votes have been made official, businesses in Tyler are scrambling to apply for permits to sell beer and wine for off-premise consumption. That application process can take more than a month.

In the meantime, one Winona business is thinking "outside the store."

"We'd rather break the mold and try something different and just start with a brand new business model," says Jen Anderson, the general manager at Tucker's Liquor, Beer, and Wine.

Their business model is similar to a pizza delivery service.

"We're like, what's better than going somewhere and buying beer and wine? Having beer and wine come to your front door," Anderson says.

Tucker's has been selling alcohol to East Texans for two years. They are a package store and have a special permit to deliver their alcohol to customers.

We checked with the TABC about the legality of the delivery service and they say it's legal.

"After reviewing the statute in question, it is my interpretation that it is legal for them to deliver wine and beer, which is authorized for sale in Tyler or other areas of the county that are wet," says TABC Lt. Victor Kuykendoll.

Tucker's will not be allowed to deliver liquor to Tyler because the city has not approved liquor sales. The manager says they will abide by the law.

"What we'll do is, when we arrive at the customer's location, we will check their credit card and we will check their ID," says Anderson.

We also spoke with a representative of the city today and they say the city does not have any involvement in this matter because it is regulated by the state.

The manager of Tucker's says the alcohol delivery service is so new that they have yet to see a big response from customers in Tyler.
