LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
A man who was shot while driving on Interstate 15 north of Las Vegas was the target of a plot involving his adopted son and another relative, police said.
The victim, Robert Bessey, was shot in the neck while driving on the southbound I-15 near the Valley of Fire State Park just after 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.
According to Metro, Bessey told officers the back window of his vehicle was shot out and he found that he had been shot in the neck.
Metro also said Bessey saw a gold GMC Yukon drive up beside his vehicle just before the incident.
Bessey was transported to University Medical Center where he underwent surgery and was later released, police said.
While at the hospital, police said, Bessey told officers that he had been in the middle of a divorce with his wife, Amy Bessey. In an arrest report, Robert told officers that Amy has expressed that he was "worth more dead than alive," citing a $250,000 life insurance policy on himself.
According to police, the life insurance policy would expire once the divorce was final.
In addition, police said, Bessey's adopted son Michael expressed dissatisfaction over the divorce, according to Robert.
According to police, Robert told detectives Michael, 21, who was recently dishonorably discharged from the Army, talked of the murder involving a NASCAR driver, Chris Trickle. Robert said Michael touted the death as a perfect crime because it involved a drive-by shooting and it remains unsolved.
In the arrest report, police were directed to a Logandale convenience store where a gold sport-utility vehicle similar to the one Robert described was seen. Through surveillance video recovered at the store, police said Michael and a man identified as Richard Pearson, 39, were seen exiting the gold SUV just before the shooting.
In the arrest report, Robert's wife, Amy, in an interview, identified Pearson as her brother, who was recently released from prison. Amy, in the arrest report, told police the SUV belonged to Pearson's girlfriend.
Police later interviewed Michael at Metro headquarters. According to the arrest report, Michael said he was at a party the night before the shooting.
In the arrest report, Michael confirmed surveillance photos showing him and his uncle "Rick." He confirmed the time and location of the photos, but stopped answering questions and asked for a lawyer, police said.
Michael was booked on attempted murder with a deadly weapon, battery and unlawful use of force.
Metro said Pearson remained loose after the incident. He was described as a white man, 5'6" in height with a shaved head and blue eyes.
Police said Pearson is on parole for grand larceny auto, possession of a stolen vehicle, felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance.
Police urge anyone with Pearson's whereabouts to call Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.
