Lacassine sugar mill debt dilemma

It took $78 million dollars to build a sugar mill in Lacassine that only operated for 90 days.

Now, Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain is borrowing $7 million dollars to take control of the defunct mill, which is teetering on default of its debt payments.

Strain says if the state doesn't buy out the mill, a bank would take over the property and the Department of Agriculture wouldn't be able to sell it or lease it to recoup some of its investment.
