PRESCOTT, AZ (CBS5) -
Authorities in Prescott have issued an arrest warrant for a businessman who they believe has been illegally selling synthetic drugs out of his store front.
On Sept. 16, Yavapai County Superior Court extended a ban on the sale of "novelty powders" by all retailers in the county.
The novelty powders include synthetic drugs such as spice and bath salts.
The judge issued a permanent injunction against nine retail shops, and issued a preliminary injunction against three stores including Island Store located at 649 Miller Valley Rd., along with its owner, Steve Wells, 56, of Prescott.
Detectives witnessed Island Store selling spice and related products during the last week of October.
Detectives also learned Wells stocked his shelves to keep up with demand.
On Nov. 8, a warrant was issued and detectives recovered more than 700 packets of spice from both the store and Wells' home, police said.
Detectives found that Wells bought $65,000 worth of synthetic drugs since the first court injunction in August and allegedly marked up the price an average of 150 percent.
Authorities issued an arrest warrant for Wells, with bond set at $150,000, based on 18 felony and misdemeanor charges.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Wells is urged to call Yavapai Silent Witness at 1-800-932-3232.
