NASHVILLE, TN (AP) -
Metro Nashville school officials have ordered one charter school closed and learned another group turned down earlier will not reapply.
According to The Tennessean, the school board decided to close poorly performing Smithson-Craighead Middle School at the end of the academic year.
Only 7.6 percent of the students at the school met proficiency standards in math on the TCAP tests earlier this year. Just 17.6 percent of the students were proficient in reading. The scores were up slightly from last year.
The board directed Superintendent Jesse Register to contact Great Hearts Academies, which it turned down three times, inviting the Arizona-based company to reapply.
But a company official said Wednesday Great Hearts will not try to open schools in Nashville, saying a constructive relationship with local officials wasn't possible.
