Group requests records on detained immigrants

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A civil rights group has asked 63 Louisiana sheriffs for records on detained immigrants, but 15 have refused to honor the request.

The Southern Poverty Law Center said it wants the documents to determine if immigrants were jailed longer than the law allows.

In the Capital area, the Ascension Parish, Assumption Parish, Livingston Parish, St. Helena Parish and West Baton Rouge Parish sheriff's offices refused to provide the records.

Last week, the group sued Sheriff Mike Couvillon of Vermilion Parish, resulting in a judge ordering he hand over the documents.
