Veterans honored on LSU's Parades Grounds

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Before homecoming festivities started Saturday, LSU celebrated our nation's veterans.

LSU students, faculty and staff gathered on the LSU's Parade Grounds to honor our nation's heroes. The ceremony, which included a fly-over and a 21-gun salute was also a day to celebrate the military accomplishments of veterans who attended the university.  The Cadets of the Ole War Skule inducted 12 alumni into the university's military hall of honor. Ed Capron, who was a prisoner of war during WWII, was thrilled to be a recognized  for his service.

"Just being here with my family was nice. They were all able to be here and actually be still living," said Capron. "It was great. It brought back a lot of memories."

Inez Shaw and her family accepted a medal today on behalf of her late husband, Lt. Colonel Stanley Shaw, who served in the military for more than 30 years.

"It was all so very special and so meaningful," said Shaw.

"You have to be proud to be an American today, and everyday of your life. It was just beautiful...a beautiful ceremony," said Sue Skillman, Shaw's daughter.

As much as everyone enjoyed today's ceremony, they all agree veterans and current service men and women should be celebrated more often.

"Everyday people should honor. They should wake up and thank God first, and then thank the men and women that support the military here," said Dan Shaw, son of Lt. Colonel Stanley Shaw.

"It's good to remember vets and stuff like that. I don't think we should forget the veterans. A lot of them are still over there right now fighting for our freedom. We should never forget the veterans," said Capron.
