GONZALES, LA (WAFB) -
The voters
have spoken in Ascension Parish and two key races were decided in Gonzales.
In a
contested race, incumbent Police Chief Sherman Jackson remains in office after
capturing more than 56 percent of the vote.
He defeated
challengers Duane Carpenter and Glynn LeBlanc.
"To
all of my co-workers and to the people here in this room that supported me for the
last five years, thank you," Jackson said. "Our mission will remain
the same and that's to provide the city of Gonzales with the best police
department, the best law enforcement in the state of Louisiana."
The voters
in Gonzalez also voted to stick with incumbent Mayor Buddy Arceneaux.
He gets his
chance to continue leading the city of Gonzales by earning more than 83 percent
of the vote over challenger Jeff White.
"The
gratifying thing, of course, is to still be part of Gonzales as it grows
today," Arceneaux said. "So, I am very, very happy about that. I'm
very happy to say that we've still got a lot of potential here in Gonzales and
we're in the best location between Baton Rouge and New Orleans."
Ascension
Parish voters also decided on several amendments.
One notable
proposed change would have been a half-percent sales tax to be used for road
repair in the parish, but it was voted down.
