Hamilton Co. elects Jim Neil as sheriff - WAFB 9 News Baton Rouge, Louisiana News, Weather, Sports

Hamilton Co. elects new sheriff for first time in 25 years

There's a new sheriff in Hamilton County.

Democrat Jim Neil beat republican Sean Donovan with 54-percent of the vote.

Wednesday, the newly-elected sheriff held a press conference to talk about his plans for the county.

Neil says he feels that one way to tackle the budget issue is to join forces with other agencies.

Sheriff-elect Neil also plans to do an independent fiscal and operational audit of the sheriff's office budget.

This is the first time in 25 years that voters have had to decide on a sheriff.

Simon Leis announced his retirement earlier this year.
