COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -
After months of campaigning, debates and speeches, area political candidates are waiting as tens of thousands in the valley are lining up to vote.
Folks in Columbus have been lining up to cast their ballots hours before the polls officially open.
Long lines were reported at several locations in Columbus including, St. Andrews Presbyterian Church.
Many people, however, were not so happy to be waiting in these lines to vote, but explain that it is something they have to do. "As frustrating as it is, it's our obligation to be part of the process. If you're not part of the process, you're part of the problem - so I'm just doing what I can, it's my only voice. If you have a problem with the government this is the only way you have to fix it is to be part of the process," said Sean Rheume, Columbus resident.
"I think a lot of people fought hard to get us this right to vote. So I celebrate it. It's a special day to me," said Nick Napier.
Another Columbus voter says she wishes she would have taken advantage of early voting, to avoid these line, but she is happy to wait because she believes her vote, will truly make a difference. "It's very important for me and my family and friends and other people that I know, to get out and vote. Everybody as an individual has to vote. Together we make a difference, and I am just trying to do my part," said Trelanne Moore.
Polls will remain open until 7pm EST in Georgia and 7 pm CST in Alabama.
