MONTGOMERY, AL (AP) -
Alabama election officials are reporting a strong voter turnout, with long lines at many polling places.
A Houston County election
official said the polls were "bombarded" when they opened at 7 a.m. and
they have been very busy ever since. The parking lots at some Montgomery
County polling places were filled to capacity Tuesday morning and
people were having to park along the roadside. An election official in
Calhoun County said there was a rush that began at 7 a.m. and it hasn't
let up since.
Alabama's chief election
official, Secretary of State Beth Chapman, is forecasting the voter
turnout will be 72 to 74%. That would be about the same as the heavy
turnout four years ago.
The polls close at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
