LSU Women’s Basketball defeats Xavier, 75-34, in exhibition game

From LSU Sports

BATON ROUGE – Theresa Plaisance and Jeanne Kenney registered double-doubles and the LSU women's basketball team opened exhibition play with a 75-34 win over Xavier of Louisiana on Thursday night in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

Plaisance scored 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting to go along with a game-high 11 rebounds. Kenney dished out 11 assists and added 11 points and five steals. Senior guard Adrienne Webb led all scorers with 18 points.

LSU, playing with only seven available players, had all five starters score in double-digits. The Lady Tigers used size to their advantage, dominating points in the paint, 38-10, and burying 21-of-29 free throws.

True freshmen Kuaneshia Baker, Danielle Ballard and Derreyal Youngblood did not play and were serving a one-game suspension for a violation of team rules.

"We had five of our players in double digits, so you like seeing the balanced attack," said LSU head coach Nikki Caldwell. "We definitely have some work to do. But considering only having seven ready to play tonight, I felt the seven that were out there fought extremely hard and fought through fatigue and that was a real testimony to their mental toughness."

Xavier, ranked in the top 15 of the NAIA Preseason Coaches poll, fielded a roster of 18 players and shot only 24.1 percent (14-of-58) for the game against LSU's 2-3 zone. The Lady Tigers countered with a 41.3 percent effort from the floor on 26-of-63 shooting.

"Offensively, we put in a whole new offensive package," said Caldwell. "This team has really worked hard on learning the game and reading the defense. We had some good looks there. What challenged us were the times where we lost our focus. We definitely needed to capitalize on some of those layups that we missed."

LSU opened the game with a 9-0 run and took a 37-12 lead into halftime. The Lady Tigers capitalized on 31 Gold Nugget turnovers that led to 35 points.

Olympic hurdler and LSU great Lolo Jones was recognized on the floor at halftime and she also addressed the team in the locker room. Jones was launching her "Hurdles of Hope" foundation with a pre-game reception in the Legends Lounge.

LSU concludes exhibition play at 7 p.m. Tuesday against North Alabama in the Maravich Center. Admission is free. Doors open at 6 p.m.
